I work on the Internet, damn it!

...so I better be the first one to figure out how to use this blog.

That's all. I really didn't have anything else to say except thanks to Claudia for putting this together. Claudia, I'll give you parenting advice offline -- my daughter Nora is 16 and smarter about the Internet than I am. She'd find this post and understand the jujitsu that's turned her into a happy, well-adjusted drug-avoiding teen (so far), unlike mom.

C'mon other slackers, figure this out and post. And I'll figure out finally how to scan photos, so I can begin to post photos here from 30-plus years ago. I had a camera. Be very afraid.

And seriously, let's use this as a venue to organize our 31st anniversary reunion. Why be conformist?

I don't see an author screen here -- this is by Joan Walsh, jwalsh@salon.com. I'm in San Francisco, come visit!

Speaking of internet/computer savvy...when our younger daughter was 7, she sequestered the command to remove the Vin Diesel wallpaper she had just downloaded from the internet so my husband couldn't remove it from the desktop.

Anyway, my kids know what I think. No tricks there.

Hi Joan
Yes, my 16 year old son came in and I was rather proud showing him this "Blog", and that I finally accessed with the help of some of my HS classmates that I have not seen in 30 years! He was unimpressed and said it looked like was simular to "my space.com". Then he kicked me off so he could check his soccer schedule. (My computer is faster you know). My husband moved it in our bedroom, so that my kids would leave me alone, but it is not working. Oh I had a camera too, and would love to drag those out and post them. But like I said Bano has the 100+ slides from the graduation show that were shown at the reunions. Those are priceless

Great to see you made it, Laurel! I can't wait to hear it! I was thinking of posting mine, too. I wonder if you'll beat me to it...

Laurel!
Are you in Hollywood?

Anonymous said...

For heavens sake Laurel, would you write something.........something other than "lets see if this works", I thought I was bad.
Oh I thought of you while I was sewing a skirt for a friend. Weren't you this fabulous seemstress in sewing class Mrs. Peterson I believe. Oh my Gosh, they did have sewing classes, "back then" didn't they?
I dragged my machine out to help a friend, who now really owes me. Please write something
Deb.

Yes, Laurel. Do!

I LOVED Mrs. Peterson! Whenever I pick out "fabric" to make a "garment" I think of her. And when I want to finish it sooner than later and think maybe I'll skip the seam finish (or take someother short-cut) I think of her again and out come my pinking shears....

I know, I keep coming back to see if Laurel posted more! Laurel -- don't be a tease!

And yes, Deb, we did have home ec, while the boys had shop. We are that old.

Anonymous said...

And now "shop" is all done on computers on the 2nd floor of the science building....

Hi , Laurel here. I just got home from Palm Springs. I have to find some time so that we can all
chat. It's too much fun having this blog. Thank you Claudia! I love all the comments and by the way my sewing sucked! I can sew a buttton on a shirt, but that was along time ago, I may have forgotten!

She's HOME!!!!

Where is home, by the way??

Unknown said...

Girl! You have to post!

Why do we have so few men on this blog? Not that I care, but...interesting.

Jimmy, Mitch, Mike and Bill, who'da thunk it?

Home sweet home is Beverly Hills, California. We even have a cement pond!
Laurel

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but do you swim in it?

(note to all: little by little we can get the story out of her...one question at a time!)

Anonymous said...

HELL NO!
That chlorine is really dangerous to my fake tan.
Laurel

Unknown said...

Chlorine turns my fake blond highlights green!

But you always had real blond hair, so you're safe, Laurel.

Fun, fun, fun! So what are you doing if you're not swimming in your cement pond? I was just in Beverly Hills last month -- long story -- and I wish I'd known you were there.

Chemical reactions, eh? Wouldn't know anything about those out here in God's Country. It IS
God's Country, by the way. We have the signs to prove it, too.

So how are things out in Heathen's Country, Laurel? Whatchoo doin? Besides still being gorgeous, that is.

And Joan, someone once asked me a few years ago when I was first experimenting with coloring my hair, if I was dyeing my hair green on purpose.

She was so SINCERE!! I told her I didn't THINK so...

Anonymous said...

Why oh why aren't the men interested in this conversation....and Rebecca, Anita, Deb! Where are you!!

Anonymous said...

I can tell now that I'm not going to get much done if I stay on this blog any longer. It's addictive!
Claudia you say such nice things! Joan, I wish we had been able to hook up, next time.
I have been married for 21 years (scary), have three teenagers ( I need a drink) and one dog.
The dog doesn't cause any trouble unlike the
others!
If your wondering why I keep sending on anonymous (not because I'm blonde and think you don't know who I'am) it's the only way my messages get through.

It IS fun, but I gotta run, too! Back later.

Does anyone know who that woman is with 3 kids and a dog, slugging that martini down over there?

Laurel, did you try clicking on "other," then typing in your name? That's what I tried, and it works every time. You're right, that this blog thing is addictive.
And we've got way more girl-talk going on here than any of the guys would be even remotely interested in joining.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Anita, having 3 kids is easier for me then working this blog. The sun here in California, along with the fake tan is baking my brain.
Laurel

Hey it gets easier once you get the hang of it, and I have 3 teen-age daughters and an 11-year old boy.
No, wait, the oldest just turned 20. They grow into adults-- just like we did. Are yours boys or girls?

So Claudia, how did the green hair look? Do you have pictures?

Anonymous said...

Certainly not, young lady!

I should say!

Claudia / PVS said...

Anita 4 kids? I have a 13 year old daughter and 16 year old twins, boy/girl
The best thing ever in my life was having those children.
Laurel

Kids are amazing, you have to admit.

Looks like Claudia is adding more toys-- now there's a new identity to click, which displays the added feature of one very fine hound. And if you click on that, you can go to a 30-second audio clip of Baba O'Riley.
Is this because the Who's Next album cover didn't attract enough attention?

I only had one, but hands down, she was the best thing I did. I never expected to feel that way.

I think part of why I'm so excited about this blog is that I'm really thinking about high school lately as I live it again with Nora, and I'm also thinking about my life, post-Nora. I feel like most of life, to this point, has been delivering on the promise/challenge we got upon graduation -- go out and find your way, support yourself, figure out the money thing, the career thing, find a partner, have a family, develop a community of friends, live out your values...etc. Having done all that, reasonably well (better or worse on each point) I do find myself thinking: What now?

Any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

me too Joan.

Anita the tune is a nod to that teenaged wasteland our pal Mitch keeps referring to...

I'm thinking of changing our greyhound picture every day, just for fun...any other ideas??

Anonymous said...

You're doing quite a job maintaining this site. I need to finish scanning that book for you-- there's a lot of useful material there.
Unless someone else still has the 20-yearbook and is more adept with this computer stuff....
I have never spent this much time in front of the computer-- it's such a time vampire! Just like Laurel said, it's addictive.

Wow. You guys are thinking a lot of the same things I am these days. My nest is nearly empty and I am trying not to be the smothering mother that my heart really wants to be! The only people I know are people I work with or parents of my kids friends! My social life has consisted of football games, baseball games, soccer games, weightlifting meets, track meets, well, you get the jist of it. As that has slowed down I contemplate--what's next? If anyone comes up with the answer, let me know! The martini thing is not a bad short term plan!

Anonymous said...

No kidding, Diddo for me Caryn, my life is simular, minus the weithtlifting & baseball games but add in Jazz Festivals, and competitions. I have a a few more years before my nest is empty and I am already bewildered about what to do next? My husband, has his part figured out, but I am in major limbo. One thing is for sure, if I have to deal with one more contractor, drapery hanger, or faux painter, I will dive head first into the bucket of plaster and call it a day. I have tons of ideas, but nothing stands out. I will NOT go back to school that's for sure. Eeck, that is one thing that is definate with me.

Wondering why no guys are posting in this section, they have run away and are very scared.

Unknown said...

We have a lot of 16 year olds in this group -- or does it just seem that way to me b/c I have one? We really should get them all together -- terrifying!

The guys are reading. Jimmy and Mitch are working on their hair -- it's Saturday night!

I'm at a crappy hotel in Philadelphia with no restaurant and I haven't eaten since breakfast. I love travel.

Anonymous said...

The guys are not scared; this is just girlish prattle that is of no consequence to guys.
Hey, really, let's get all the 16 year-olds together. I have one. A daughter named Jana (the "J" is pronounced like a "Y",) and Story Ladish has a 16 year-old son named Alek (did I spell that right?)
I don't know why she's not participating in any of these comments....

Unknown said...

Well, I think Laurel says she has 2, and Caryn has one...I know I'm missing a few. But 1990 was clearly a busy year for us...

Anonymous said...

Beth H has a almost 16 (Dec) year old daughter, Meg. I have a almost 16 (Dec) year old son Alex. 1990 must have been a fertile year?

That's kind of scary. Can you imagine all those hormones in one space???

Anonymous said...

Alright ladies -enuff!!!

I'm only thinking about one set of hormones after reading these comments. How about a pint of Jackie D. on ice with about 200 cc of the "clear" added?

You want the boys back on this chatter....then we better start seeing something that interests us like a discussion about Milwaukee's best taverns and strip clubs - ideally the place named would be one in the same.

You want more "xy" interplay - then let's get some shots of you all typing this stuff in the nude. Don't forget - this is cyberspace -reality is just a click away!!!!

Note to Joanie - James Lee is too busy to respond - he'll check in soon after he finishes his sponge bath and paints his nails!

Anonymous said...

Ok, I first of all want to 100% deny I paint my toes and I haven’t had a sponge bath in weeks. However, the feety pajamas are another story (actually I had left the following message in the comments section to my blog earlier today, but Mjb, that John Malloy wannabe, seemed to have moved his disparaging commentary to avoid my rebuttal). So what is wrong with feety pajamas? If you must know I wore them for a medical reason. As Debbie Herz (my seventh grade square dance partner) can attest to, I suffered from Hyper Hydrosis, which is excessive sweatiness of the hands and feet. I was required to wear feety pajamas or else risk permanent damage to Helen’s (my dear sweet mom) carpet fibers or risk having family members tumble on our linoleum. In fact, one time my brother Fred did a header late at night when he was trying to steal beer from our fridge. I would hope my classmates would show more sensitivity to my “condition”.

I also wanted to reply to Mitch’s earlier comment (in my blog comments section) about Bill Pick’s portrayal of Bernardo (Mark Hickman portrayed Tony, Bill was cast in the other role because he looked so Hispanic). I for one thought Bill captured the essence of other great SHS acting legends (yes we really did have them). For me he combined the sheer animal magnetism of John Fiedler (who played Mr. Peterson on the original Bob Newhart Show, but even more important was the voice of Piglet in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day) with the whimsy of Charlotte Rae (who played Miss Garret on The Facts of Life).

By the way, the entire basketball team can also attest that Mitch sang only Who songs in the shower. However, if memory serves me right, he only knew two songs, Boris the Spider and I’m A Boy. Candidly, he sang the second song most of the time and it gave the team the willies.
