Of Missing Persons
The new list on the left has been provided by Deb R. If you know of anyone's whereabouts or would like other names posted, please either go in and post them yourself, or I'd be glad to do it for you, too.
Isn't Susan Lubar in Mequon or Germantown or somewhere out there?
I talk to Dan Rybold every once and a while ... last I heard he's in SF living with Joan Walsh, I mean near Joan Walsh, sorry.
I talk to Bryan Wulz and actually see him every year or so ... he's in Atlanta.
However, Dan R went to Marquette High, not SHS and Bryan disliked us so much he graduated early in '75. So I think we'll need a student council vote to approve their potential attendance.
On the other hand I'm all in favor of inviting Jeanette Fick and Suzi Fantuzzi.
Wow, such names from the past and a few faces that I just can't put with the names. Lori Hoober was living in Madison when I lived there eleven years ago but don't know if she is still there. Her last name then was VanCastor. Her husband's name was Mario. Hope that helps. I believe it is Grafton for Susan Lubar Solvang.
You're all freakin' me out man! I spent years trying to supress my memories of you people and this one little blog makes it all come rushing back! And all too clearly too, I can even remember the last time I saw most of you, let's see if any of you remember..
Claudia: we met up in some bar on Oakland Ave and made plans to see eachother the next night, and then I stood you up. I didn't think you would even remember until my brother told me you were looking for me. Sorry about that.
Jane: The last time i saw you was early in the morning on west 3rd street in Manhattan and you looked oh so stylish and were as funny as ever.
Bill P: You and Ann Miller showed up at my door totally out of the blue the night before Thanksgiving and tried to kidnap me. I wish I could have run off with you guys but the timing was kind of bad. By the way, what was up with that? I mean, i was friends with both you and Ann, but seperately...it was weird seeing you together.
Joan Walsh: The last time I saw you in person was when we had lunch together at UWM. Of course I've been reading you for years, and now more than ever since you have become the liberal voice of America. Rock on!
Dan E: You were pointing and laughing...
Mitch: The last time I saw you, well I didn't really see you, I was looking at Betty Lynch who was looking at you.
I could go on and on but you get the idea.
It's great to see that you guys are smarter and funnier than ever, but for real, this is freaking me out. When Maureen mentioned a Three Dog Night song on the Jukebox in the Youth Center I immediately envisioned Sophie Nicholas, that dark little seperate area where the rebels hung out, and high waisted plaid bell bottoms, oh yeah, and Claudia rushing through clutching her purse made from an oriental carpet, with her cape billowing behind her.
Somebody please tell me this is all just a figment of my imagination and when I come to i will be back home in Brooklyn. Just kidding. Seriously, it's right nice to come across you folks again.
Holy cow, Dan!! How great to hear from you! Hey, tell us who you are and what you do, etc. Do you get how to write your own post (as opposed to making only "comments)?
Let me know if you need any help claud41c@yahoo.com
Debbie Zarne left her job as a NYC attorney and is chasing her dream of being a movie maker, taking courses at Stanford, I believe. That is what I recall when I ran into her mother last year. Looks like you got the correct info for Susan Lubar Solvang - shouldn't be too hard to find with the Lubar name around Milwaukee. Anne Devitt married a guy named Ned Hoffmann. I believe they live somewhere in the Milwaukee area, as their refurbished historical home was recently a subject for an article in the Journal Sentinel's Real Estate section. She can also be found at the County Courthouse where she's an Assistant DA.
Thanks Anita, I just wished I had proofed and edited before clicking send. Is that anonymous person Laurel Blackmore??? I don't remember the last time I saw you but I do have a most vivid memory of you. One day, back in spring of '76, Tim Vlazny and I were in the little theater (remember the little theater)? doing an improv exercise in a class of Mrs. Gensler's. I somehow got distracted and looked out the window and there you were strolling across the parking lot in all your glory. You were so radiant it seemed as if the sun was basking in your glow, and not the other way around. I motioned to Tim to look out the window and he saw what I saw, and he knew, oh he knew. Needless to say, you then became the focus of our scene and when it was over Leslie Sweeney complained that it wasn't believable. Mrs. Gensler shot her down and said that she totally believed that Tim would find a way to accidentally drench Laurel Blackmore's shirt with water and that his doing so would make Dan spontaneously burst into "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling"
Hey Claudia, No I haven't figured out how to start a new post yet, but I'll get to it soon, I'm having too much fun reading up on everyone else, and you. So far you seem the most changed.
I'm working on it, Dan. And I just remembered the night I saw you in Platt's...at least I remember about one second of it! And yes, we did plan to meet -- and yes, you DID stand me up.
Dan, you really had me laughing. I remember Mrs.Gensler she was one of the really nice teachers. Regarding the missing: Martine Powers is still in Milwaukee, I talk to her quite often. She is married, has a daughter and two grandchildren! Chris Schumacher is still in Milwaukee too. I saw her a very long time ago and she has something like 8 kids!
Nah, no plans this year, and I work on Wall Street now so I won't/can't be pulling any stunts at work either. I miss the old days when I was Guest Services Manager at The Plaza and could wear fangs and flirt with the guests (there Claudia, I work on Wall Street and before that I spent 14 years at The Plaza, and I also wrote original shows for the Blue Note, produced a couple of jazz CD's and acted (badly) on Japanese television. Do I still have to write a bio post?)
Dan, I always thought you were the most colorful, and facinating person in our class, yet I was always scared to intereact with you - was intimidated by your over the top personality; thinking I would never be able to be as witty and interesting as you. Meanwhile, my 16 year old son, has a best freind who reminds me so much of you. Even looks a bit like you. I love your "bio", not at all surprised by your eclectic resume. What jazz C.D's.? My 14 yr old is a Jazz Musician (trumpet)
Deb, what an incredibly nice thing to say! Thank you so much. I think it's great that you remember me as colorful and fascinating, I figured that people remembered me as obnoxious and nuts! lol I wish you had interacted with me, and I with you. I remember you as always smiling, and calm, almost Zen like, it was like you had an answer the rest of us didn't. The Jazz Cd's I have produced are The Great Bob Casanova (on my own Numonic label, which had the quickest death of any label ever) and From The Inside Out (on the New Artists Label, and this one is still available). I've also done music research for several movies including Sleepless In Seatle, You've Got Mail, and a bunch of others that I didn't get credit for. If you look me up in the Film Database thing the only movie that lists me so far is Golden Threads and ironically enough the cut that was finally released of that movie didn't feature any of my work. If your kid yahoo's you should tell him to check out a music group I recently started on Yahoo called BillieHoliday_and_The_Disciples_of_Swing. It's still a really small group, only 75 members so far, but the music files are often rare, and they are always changing. It's pretty much a group about jazz vocalists but we often features Chet baker, one of the greatest jazz trumpets of all time. I'm just babbling like crazy in these posts? What about you, what are you up too?
Dan B You will have to scroll all the way down to where it says "Older Posts" that is where us few, original, "Claudia Disciples" Posted our Bio. I'll tell my son to check out that music group. No, I don't remember you as obnoxious and nuts.
Great to see you are passionate about Chet Baker, B. Holiday, et al in the bygone Swing Jazz Era.
My wife and I, Linda, go Lindy Hop Swing dancing all the time in the Bay Area (CA) and, sometimes, when we're traveling in the USA (or in London and Copenhagen, both of which have BIG Lindy Hop/Swing Dance scenes)
By the way, think of the Gap commercial from the late '80s when you think about Swing (aerials included). It's been a great joy to discover the 1920's-40's classic jazz era.....and we started taking Swing/Lindy Hop lessons long ago together.
Yes, we do aerials, too.....It's Great Fun and I even wear the old-time Fedora Hat with the bird feather and the Cab Calloway Zoot Suit-like garb on occasion -- though I don't know how people danced with those hot "uniforms" before A/C existed.
No wonder people were NOT as overweight back then: They danced and there was no A/C.........and they smoked! -- a pursuit folks have NOT been able to do by law in CA since 1996.
In any event, if you want to check out the Milwaukee Swing/Lindy scene, it's Tuesday nights at the Milwaukee Ale House on S. Water...I'll be there with Linda on 11/21 when we visit for the holidays...and the Web site there is ccswing.com........and another Web site that's great for old-time Swing clothing, dancing, and worldwide locales for Lindy Hop/Swing: jitterbuzz.com...........Our local Bay Area web site for Lindy Hop/Swing events: lindylist.com
That "comment deleted by...blog administrator" looks so rude, and leaves the impression that Claudia had to remove some insulting remarks about Dan Edelstein. Not the case! I (once again) posted in the wrong place and censored myself. In fact, I think it's great that Dan and his wife are doing their part to keep swing music alive, and rare bird species alive too! I mean if it weren't for Dan I would have never learned that the Attwater Prarie Chicken was something other than an item on the Shorewood Public Schools lunch menu? You should all check out his site, warblerwatch.com it's fascinating.
Dan E.-I'm very impressed!! All I can say is where were you in HS when we needed male dancers for the musicals?
Have to say that Tom and I were down at the Ale House one Thurs. eve about a year ago. It just happened to be swing dance nite. So we took a couple of lessons and had great fun! I was intrigued by those who could really "cut the rug" as they say. And some of the outfits....very cool! I love the clothing style and the music of the 30's and 40's. I must have lived during that era in a past life!!
How about a picture of you in that Zoot suit and the Fedora hat! Anyone else think this would be a GREAT blog pic!!!
Hell yeah! Plus the pic of Joan Walsh in a cheerleaders outfit, please. Oh, but not the one of Perry Andrews. Perry kind of sits on a pedestal in my memory and seeing him in drag would just be too disconcerting. But any other pictures would be great, especially embarrassing or incriminating ones.
Forgot to mention- I ran into Mary Dowe last spring at a yoga training. I had no idea who she was but she recognized me. She said that she keeps in touch with Robin Gensch and some others from our class. She gave me her email/phone # but for the life of me I can't find it. I think I can get that info from the studio that we were at. In the meantime I'll keep an eye out for that little white piece of paper.

I think that Randy Moss plays for the Oakland Raiders as a wide receiver, after being run out of Minneapolis????

Want to hear your story, okay?

Dan Berghaus, that was a touching entry you included in Gary's guestbook!
very touching is right.

Speaking of Drama, Dan, it is Halloween, and you did a good job playing in the SHS production of Dracula, any Halloween plans tomorrow?
