And What Are YOU Doing, Anyway?

I have links to a couple of sites that describe what a few of us are up to. I'm going to post them here and keep adding as you guys send more.

If you have a website or company website that let's us know what you're doing, where you work, or what you're interested in, send it over and we'll post it here. Thanks!

I happen to know Bob "Hawaii" Harrison is back in Hawaii and living in Honolulu. I'm quite sure he moved back there in the mid 80s, bartended in Waikiki for a while, did a bunch of theatre, managed a cigar store, and now works in the health insurance industry as a data geek. He just turned 49 on 1/11, or so he claims.

You might visit him at:

Statrix

He tells me Statrix is short for 'statistical tricks' but doesn't explain more.

Hi, Bob! Nice talking to you through the "Skype!" Does anyone else have a "Skype" account besides Rebecca or Bob? If not, check out skype.com.

Hi Bob,
Aloha from the now frigid midwest. Global warming is creating havoc with our WI weather. Visited your site "Statrix". When time allows I'd like to check out your photography. Glad you've posted. Now all you need to do is get that plane ticket back to WI in July for the reunion!

By the by-Anita and Bob-what the heck is Skype? (for us less sophisticated tech newbies)

Skype is an internet app that allows you to chat with other folks over the internet. Unlike a text messenger application it's primary mode is voice or voice and video (if you have a webcam). You can, however, also use text. In addition, for a fee (though it was free for most of 2006) you can also place phone calls just about anywhere. [I don't work for these guys.]

I signed up for their North American $14.95 (through 1/31) plan to use it as an outgoing phone. Indeed, when Anita originally Skype'd me I was out and had set it to forward the call to my cell phone. Calling foreign phones has a different plan though that's pretty cheap too. $2.10 is about an hour of talk to a foreign phone.

However, if you don't need or want to use it as a telephony application, it's free computer to computer. Anita and I talked for quite some time yesterday. I got to see her because she has a webcam though I didn't (that has changed since last night leaving me with the decision of whether I feel camera ready).

There are a number of options for contact lists, you can allow the planet in, just your contacts, no one, etc., depending on your mood and status.

I believe that we can even set up a conference with up to 10 folks, though I may have read that wrong.

Anita has been using for it a while now, I just stumbled across it the other day.

Yup, that's it-- hey, Patti-- I'll bring the laptop to the meeting, and since Stone Creek has a wireless connection, I can show you how it works. If you want to, you can sign up for free at Skype.com.

Back to the original headline for this string/theme: "And What Are You Doing, Anyway?".....

I know the answer to that question for Dan Berghaus, given his two wonderful Web sites posted here.

He's obviously "having fun".....as the Swing and Lindy Hop scene in the Big Apple is par excellence.

Good for you, Dan...you Hep Cat!

The rest of the Swing/Lindy Hop
scene nationwide is truly a step below NYC, but, nonetheless, still heaven and bliss on the dance floor.

BTW, for those who saw the movie, The Aviator (L. DiCaprio, etc.), it recreated many LA area Swing/Lindy Hop scenes from the 30s and 40s.....Swing Kids is also good and has some good Swing/Big Band. Even the movie "A League of Their Own" (Madonna and R. O'Donnell has some great Swing music scenes and riffs of Swing dancing/aerials......)

OK Anita-Looking forward to it. Do we need a second laptop for additional people searches?

If it's not a problem, might as well bring watcha got!

Hey, Daniel E, you are aware that we all are expecting a demonstration of the dances that you and your wife have learned? Please get a playlist together and email that to Laurel, since she is handling the DJ. Anyone else that thinks of any particular favorite songs from our high school years, please email those to Laurel, as well!

Anonymous said...

Yes, thanks, Anita....(and Laurel):

As mentioned to Laurel in an email I sent her 1-2 weeks ago: I'm glad to teach a basis basic fundamental
dance step (East Coast Swing), which is very easy for people to learn, if they don't
know how to dance or want a step to use with Big Band/Classic Jazz.

It's the kind of step that wedding couples learn for their One Big Dance in Front of Everyone before they cut the cake.

Heck, I'll even teach people a basic dip move to end a song in a romantic fashion.

Does that work? Would folks wish to have a lesson?

I can bring my Big Band/Swing music, too -- as a lot is on my iPod and it can easily plug into
any stereo/sound system. Good idea? I have a LOT of excellent music for dancing.

As for photos of me and my wife, they are present -- but we have to get them digital,
then will be able to share them with folks so they can see my Two Left Feet on the
dance floor......Okay, Hepcat......Have a great day.......Cheers, Daniel

Daniel, I did say that we wanted to see a demonstration--
But Laurel originally signed on for a 70's deejay because she expressed an interest in a 70's theme for that evening.
I'm thinking, maybe, pick your top 3?
But, what do I know--
Maybe the crowd will call for an encore?

Anonymous said...

The DJ can play anything we want, just let me know.

Anonymous said...

OK, Laurel: Thanks.....I'll follow the advice and send you a playlist of suggestions......BUT, of course, everyone should feel free to Share & Tell their favorites to you.........and, by the way, a 70's theme music is fine and perfect anyway.

Folks seem to like dancing singularly a lot and the Big Band/Classic Jazz Era genre is more for couples/partner dancing.

Perhaps we could have a little of both genres played by the DJ?

Cheers, Daniel

Just dropping by to say hi to everyone! I am one of the Geist twins from our class.

I will try to think of some songs as well.

Oh... I posted my web site. I know that masterpiece is spelled wrong, but the girl who hosted my site did that. LOL

Hmmm... I guess all you have to do to see my site is click on my name on the post above.

It is called: Portraits by Monica

Anonymous said...

...or go to the link on the post--
I've added it to the list.

Good to see you here! I enjoyed reading the quotes about twins that you've gathered on your website!
Funny, what some people come up with!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for adding me Anita.

Being a twin you do hear some crazy stuff. LOL Monette and I work at the same place and people are always mixing us up to this day.

Welcome Monica!! I am completely unsurprised that you draw for a living -- you were always good, and your drawings now are wonderful. Great to see you here!

Yes, Daniel, I'm up for a dance lesson!

My husband and I just started taking ball room dance lessons. It's actually a good thing--we have to do the same thing at the same time... and cooperate.

And I'm not so sad I've had to give up my attempts at leading. It actually works out better when just one of us is "in the driver's seat."

Bob, the photos on your website are BEAUTIFUL!

Based on the dialogue here and the careers and creativity revealed here at this thread/sidebar, "What Are You Doing, Anyway?" here's my ratings of the coolest and most amazing/remarkable people in our Class of '76.

These folks are clearly to be noted and honored with their own dance at the #31:
- Joan Walsh
- Dan Berghaus
- Monica Geist
- Claudia Nowicki
- Holly Tappen
- Everyone else tied for Cool/Remarkable Runner-up

Everyone gets a ribbon!

Tch! Wrong, 'nonny. The first name on that list should be Claudia Nowicki. After that you can do what you want.
