What a picture and oh how we dominated the floor with our height and weight. I think Pick was our tallest guy standing in at 6 feet. Hey, the short shorts were standard wear back then. Like all things one day Im sure these will come back in vogue. NOT!!!
Dan, did Mr Ness just yell at you and you had to do 20 laps? I remember the shoes as being Converse All Stars and you could buy them at a store on Oakland, what was the name of that? You had to walk up a ramp to enter.
Yes, part of pretending you possessed talent was to give the Ms. Zwitter Mean Look (Remember her from math).
BUT pretending could only work for so long before the enemy figured you out.
By the way, I only look mean because my shorts were four sizes too small -- and I am grimacing with discomfort. To this day, I think my sperm count is low.
Bill, the name of the store was Tojek's. You also have the wrong coach. We were led by Dennis Williamson, who always treated us with such respect. He used to call Kris Johnson.Hemorrhoid Head...what a role model.
Jim, I think this is the freshmen team is it not. That was coached by Ness right? Williamsion was the JV coach and I could not stand the guy. He was crass. Tojeks, that is it. Cool store. Dan I never had Zwitter but if she makes you look like that Im glad I did not the good fortune to be instructed by her.
Tojeks, wow, almost lost in the memory bank like Shore Vu. My brother had a issue with Mr.Rebolz, who did not pick him for the varisty BB team. He is 45 years old and still brings that up. Then he wrecked his knee for good in BB in Gym. All these years later- three surgerys -and future knee replacment, he still blames Mr. R?!?!?!
Yes, correcto, as it's the Frosh Team photo and not the JV. Mr. (Elliot) Ness was our coach, and no relation to the Untouchables. He was a nice man who knew little about jump shots. Ask him a question at the time out and he'd draw a quadratic equation to set up the play. I think he needed an Abacus or Slide Rule to feel comfortable on the sideline. I'm sure his favorite movie is "Clueless."
As for the belts, "what, you don't like?" They were in style. Besides, they held up the shorts. You didn't want to see our red faces, correct?
Tojeks? Before malls, it was the Only Game In Town to get athletic shoes. You'd ask for the selection, and the bald salesperson would say "We've got one kind; either take it or leave it?" I gulped hard and threw down my plastic. The layway plan was AOK with me. Four major installment payments to get to the $9.95 total. Funny, those Chuck Taylor's would now go for four times as much on eBay.
Bill and Daniel, sorry to disagree with you both, but I am certain this is the JV team since I also have the freshman picture ( I befriended someone in camera club, though I can't remember who it was), which has Marc Levinson and me with a "frito bandito" mustache. That picture must have been between my biweekly shaves. Also James Townes and Victor Scott didn't join our class until sophomore year. Anyway, I will have to dig out our freshmen team picture and have it scanned for your enjoyment.
Yes, Daniel -- Victor showed up Sophomore year. He was in Mr. om...McGuiness's English class with me and Jeannette and Rob Sorrin. Rob used to drive poor old Mr. McGuiness NUTS.
We were studying MacBeth, which I still claim to have read, thanks to that class!
I don't remember whether McGuiness' English class was freshman or sophomore year-- just that Robbie Sorrin and I both sat in the front row, and Robbie kept making the funniest faces. I don't think I heard a word the teacher said-- I was so fascinated by the prankster....
Claud, Rob Sorrin of Hartford Ave fame? I can't remember him going to Shorewood. Oh well I can't remember a lot of things.
Jim great recall on the names. I looked at those guys and could not come up with their names. Ok, I guess you are right, but Im still not 100% sure. Where is Chris Johnson these dats.
I don't remember Rob Sorrin either? I think Mr. McGinnis was sophomore year. Ditto Claudia, I can say that I read MacBeth as well. "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse". Oh wait, I think that was Richard III? I always thought that Mr. Wmson was very funny, did not realize that he was so mean to the BB team. Y'all look like such nice, well behaved young men?
Chris Johnson? I remember 15-20 years ago hearing he was a stand-up comedian in the Chicago area. Is that true? Does that mean he wasn't funny sitting down?
As for Mr. Williamson, sure he wore sand paper on the surface. BUT he was the best coach I ever played for....He was passionate and focused. He knew how to motivate at the correct times when the game was on the line.
Wouldn't that be so cool if he were a comedian? I can see it! Deb, he was a tall handsome pretty soft spoken guy. Or did you ask about Rob Sorrin? Rob was a funny guy, smart, and he could turn his eyelids inside out. His mom and mine were friends when we were babies, and I think he switched to JKF Prep after he drove Mr. McGuiness irrevocably (sp?) nuts.
And horses/kingdoms were Richard III's thing -- Macbeth was with the witches and toil and trouble and...dare I say IDES OF MARCH? Is that right? Quick! Shakespere knowitalls, come forth!
Geez, wasn't it Julius Caesar who was to beware the Ides of March? I don't know. But the address we have for Kris Johnson is a Chicago address-- we're still waiting for a response....
ANYWAY-- I have now added the frosh b-ball team to this entry to set the record staight. This is right out of the 1973 Copperdome, which doesn't scan well. (Jim, if you have a better scan of the original, you can email it to me & I'll switch it out.)
Yes, "Beware the Ids of March" is Julius Ceasar. Ids means the 15th of March for anyone who doesn't know Latin,(which would be me)!! Boy, we are good remembering all this Shakespeare eh?? Yes, CLaudia, that was Mr. Wmson, tall dark and a little gruff, but funny. Is it me or is are the frosh BB shorts shorter than sophopmore year? More shinney too. That Marc Levenson was such a ham, anyone know what happened to him? He was in my kindergarten class too
Deb, I was just wondering the same thing myself, where is Marc Levenson? I remember playing HORSE in his driveway. I'm sure my interests weren't all basketball.... And when did he leave shorewood?
Jodie, Marc appears a few times in the freshman year Copperdome, then only in the tennis team picture sophomore year. He must've not stayed through that year?
I was good buds with Marc as he lived just up the block from me. He was agreat guy and he moved away sophmore year I believe. His dad took a job in San Fran. and they moved out there. Dr.Levinson was one of the mostly higly praised doctor on infant diseases or something. I have no idea where Marc is today. Too bad Im sure he would come if he new about this.
Oh yeah, now that you mention it, I don't think it is pediatrics, I think his Dad was some pioneer in Invetro Fertalization and I thought they moved to Texas? I remember Marc having a real dry/wacky sense of humor.
Kris Johnson called me after the 20th reunion to thank me for turning him on to theatre. He is a professional actor, or at least was a decade ago, and worked in Florida. Where is Jed Jaworski now? And Terry Stout? And Gillian Sender?

Cute is right!
I LOVE the Chuck Taylors...and the belts(?).
How retro - 32 years later and Chuck Taylors are everywhere. Every color. Every design
Shoes................what about the short SHORTS.
Daniel Edelstein!! You look like you're ready to hurt someone!

Anyway great picture, what a group.

omg, after seeing this Pic I think the guys made Hot Pants the rave, lol.
I still say they look WAY better than the "kids these days" that wear their shorts down around their knees, or even ankles, for heaven's sake!!!
Am I old, or what....
Young men have beautiful legs! Why would anyone hide them! Go girls! I liked those SHORTS!
After all didn't we have the same style in our "gym outfits"? Ugh!
Bill, the name of the store was Tojek's. You also have the wrong coach. We were led by Dennis Williamson, who always treated us with such respect. He used to call Kris Johnson.Hemorrhoid Head...what a role model.
I remember Tojek's! That ramp!

OK, I'm still wondering about the belts...

All I can say is, Young Legs. Wow.
darn! We should've had Chris and Jimmy wear shorts in the birthday party pic above so we could compare....

by the way Daniel-- correction to your correction-- this picture is from sophomore year (do you still have your Copperdomes?)
I can also add the frosh team picture from the previous year, if you'd like to see it.
C'mon-- those pants weren't that tight
Yes, Daniel -- Victor showed up Sophomore year. He was in Mr. om...McGuiness's English class with me and Jeannette and Rob Sorrin. Rob used to drive poor old Mr. McGuiness NUTS.

Why are Freshmen called Frosh? I've never understood that. Anita, can you illuminate?
I don't remember whether McGuiness' English class was freshman or sophomore year-- just that Robbie Sorrin and I both sat in the front row, and Robbie kept making the funniest faces. I don't think I heard a word the teacher said-- I was so fascinated by the prankster....
oh, yeah-- "Frosh" is just "Freshmen" shortened up a bit
