Whoever you are, you're making me homesick.

Anonymous said...

Me, too. And that's the idea!

Well, our photographer certainly has selected some notable sites.

Hmmmm, who could this person be, (all of them most current & in good weather conditions). It appears to be a mystery, was this preconceived photography or a record of rememberance.
I am going to make a few guesses just for the fun of it- Peggy, Claudia OR maybe Anita ( or perhaps I'm totaly off base because I recognize that bar downtown, from long ago). (we know whose family owned that- hint hint the gaslight. Fess up, whenever you feel like it! Whoever you are! I love the photos! Thank you G

not me....

For those of us who have been gone a long time ( me 28 years!), would you please give us a little information about the pictures, please.
The sad part is I really remember Hooligans, the only part that looked strange was it stands alone with no other buildings on either side. What street was Sendiks on, I can't remember!
Thanks for the photos!

***WARNING***SPOILER***

Okay, that first one is of Atwater Beach -- remember when those steps used to be a tram? Cathy Billings and I spent every single summer day of 1970 down there with our pal David Sorensen.

Then the Bradford Beach Pavillion, where I always wished my mom would buy me something when I was little. sniff!

Then the Up and Under Pub on Brady Street. (whew!)

Then a shot of the deli at Benji's on Oakland.

Then dear old Hooligan's, of course.

Then a shot of Downer Avenue -- the corner next to the theatre there used to be a 31 Flavors, and I think...was it a pharmacy at one time in the early sixties? Or a shoe store?

Then another shot of Downer, and then another. That is the Sendik's on Downer. I understand that the one on Oakland is finally closing?

I was looking for a shot of Oriental Lanes, but only found the theatre. Oriental Drugs is gone, too? 'Cause I couldn't find a shot of that, either.

We should all keep adding to these as we find them if you guys want, like in the Missing Persons post...

Thank you Claudia!
It's all coming back to be, what great memories.
I remember going to Atwater beach all the time, but not Bradford. I remember always walking down and not trusting the tram! I'm sure I took it up because I was so lazy. The deli, eating there all the time with my mother. What is the cross street of Sendrick's?
What a trip down memory lane!

Anonymous said...

Just a little trivia...
The Sendicks on Oakland is not closing. (Unless you know something different - if so tell me so my sister can start looking for another job!)
The Sendicks on Oakland is not even owned by the Sendicks family anymore. It was sold to John Nehring who has over extended himself in a big way by buying several other specialty food stores and wine bars.
Benji does not own Benji's anymore.
He used to help out the new owners but haven't seen him in a few years.
The Oriental drugstore/ pharmacy is no longer there. (Sad, sad, sad.) It has been replaced by the twisted fork.
And Laurel, the Sendicks on Downer is right in between where the old Coffee Trader and Sentry used to be. It's south of UWM by about a mile.
For those of you that haven't been to Milwaukee in the past several years, you will be amazed at all of the changes. Some good and some bad - lot's of small, charming, independent businesses taken over by corporate America. I try and patronize these privately owned shops but they are getting fewer and far between. You still can't pay me to go to Walmart though.

When I took my boys down to Atwater Beach in 2004, the Consession Stand/bathhouse was torn down. Only a little of the foundation left. Looked like some sort of arch. dig in ancient Rome.
How sad. Even the perky/ clueless life guards were unaware that that was part of a building.
Wow, what a trip down memory lane. Laurel, I left Milwaukee in l983, so you & I are in the same memory loss boat.

Anonymous said...

So, Claudia--
Then you posted these pictures?

Anonymous said...

Yes, Ma'am, I did. And I'm looking for more.

Anonymous said...

Hey Peg I'll give you 10 bucks to go to Wal Mart!

Anonymous said...

Deb I'm sorry to hear about the arch. dig at Atwater. You'd think they'dve turned the place into a mall by now...I'm surprised they let it go. Plus I always thought the tram should've stayed. Hazardous and ridiculous or not, it was cool.

Anonymous said...

I just had lunch at Benji's deli today. Maybe the old owner is gone but the food is still great. Corn beef on rye with just a touch of mustard.

Claudia did you take these pictures for real? Peggy how do you know whats going on every where in the 7 county area. Your amazing.

For those class mates who have departed this fine state remember this. For the last 7 days its been a cold one. -10 with wind chills in the -20 30 range. Glad the reunion is in July Im sure it will be in the 30's by then.

Anonymous said...

Dearest Nonymo,

No I didn't TAKE the pictures, I FOUND the pictures on web...

And Peggy that was really interesting, by the way!!

What else do you know?

Anonymous said...

Psst to group: Anonymous lives in Milwaukee, you guys!

Anonymous said...

Peggy, I enjoyed your info on Milw. and I live here, lol.
You are so right about The Oriental drugstore. (sad indeed)
They better never try that with the Oriental Theater or we may have a Riot.

Claudia I love your sense of humor, you crack me up :)
You are right about the Tram, I loved that thing!

Claudia:

Never fear, 'Nymous here

Please tell me how you know I'm in Miw-waukee. Is it because I don't prounounce the "l" in Milwaukee?
Have Friday Fish Fry receipts crumpled up in my car backseat?
Go to George Webb every day?
See my ISP # from my account?

:-)

Anonymous said...

Non I would NEVER reveal another person's ISP. So rude! But I believe you referred to Wisconsin as "this state" in an earlier post. You gave yourself away, darling. Still...we don't know who you are.

and Martine you are just plain sweet. thanks!

Anonymous said...

Hmmm....Claudia, 'er a good guesser and a great WebGuru and a creative-fun friend, BUT I'm not in Wisssconnsinn (accent)....you betcha'...."dare hey" (north of Eagle River and Hayward, WI people actually say this phrase
(Wanna another piece of cherry pie? dare hey...the waitress asks.........In S. WI rural areas, it's merely "you betcha!".......

Can Non simply dance with you at the reunion? :-)

Anonymous said...

Will you be wearing the bag?

Anonymous said...

That sounded...weird. At best.

Anonymous said...

hmmm. this anon could be an uninvited guest. A challenge ? Seriously, keeping with the same subject I can (as, I think, can Martine, Greta, Peggy, Thalia, Jodi and everyone else in Milwaukeeland) post whatever pics you all like. If you want a pic of Landmark Lanes, I can make it happen. How about the vacant lot (now a nature preserve)or the beach below Debbie Herz's house ? Long time gone, but Good Times. Andy N.

Anonymous said...

Yes! Andy! Bring'em on!!!

Anonymous said...

Debbie Herz's party palace, what great memories. Would love to see the beach. For some reason I remember every room in that house , even the black and white tiles in Debbie's bathroom! The basement was the best! We had so much fun there. It was the first time I had ever had bagels and loxs!
I remember her Mom had twin boys after our graduation. Does anyone know where she is?

Anonymous said...

I cannot get past the "Twins" after we graduated" fact?? Can you Ladies ever imagine having babies when you have a 18 year old. (My grandmother did, my Moms older sisters were 22, & 18 years older than she)? Egads. God Bless her!!!
What happened to Kohls? Remember Shor-View Grocercy Store on Capitol Drive?

Anonymous said...

Oh my gosh, Shore-Vu! Now I AM gonna cry. I remember Jeannette and I always finding excuses to walk over there at night when we were in 8th grade -- so we could check out what was going on "in town." Ha!

Anonymous said...

My first job was at Shore-Vu. Me and Jodie were both checkers there. Remember?

Anonymous said...

Oh Rebecca -- Yes!! I remember now, though I'd forgotten. What sweet girls!

Anonymous said...

I cannot remember you guys working at Shore Vu??? WOW

Anonymous said...

Hey Andy, do you have a Pic of Shore Vu? :)

Hey, do you all remember Woolworths next to Big Boy, wow that just came back to me. Or did you all discuss that already, lol.

Anonymous said...

I'll try to get some pics up next by weekend unless someone wants to beat me to it... unfortunately no pics of Shore-vu. Occasionally I could get beer there. A better place to buy beer was Hayeks though. Jack and Bill (pharmacists) never minded.

I'll look around for old pics. seems everything is on the web these days.

Anonymous said...

OK, I don't remember you guys being there, but MY first job was a checker at Shore-Vu! (They took such advantage of unskilled labor?)Geez, I remember selling beer there to my underage friends....
Isn't that wierd that the drinking age was lowered to 18 back then?
I only lived a half-block away. I think I was only 16.
After it closed, it became a lamp store, then a bike store, and I don't know what else. There used to be a gas station next door, which became a parking lot.

Andy, we have a meeting at Kathy Nelsen's on Saturday. Remember-- you were going to get off work so that you could make it! Then, it's picture time.

Anonymous said...

I also worked at Shore-vu. I can remember all my friends coming in and I would ring everything up at half the prices! I think I lasted only 2 months, do you remember the hot ham they sold that was sliced really thin? I was a vegetarian at the time, but I couldn't resist and well that was the end of being a vegetarian for 2 years. Thats how good it was!
I also remember Hayeks, my mother had a account there and they would deliver, I really abused that!

Anonymous said...

That's wild...I don't remember you guys--Anita and Laurel--working there, too!

I do remember the hot ham and rolls on Sunday. It sure smelled delicious.

I was fifteen when I got the job and worked there for about a year.

The younger brother was on the lascivious side...I remember squeezing myself against the check-out aisle as far as I could so that when he passed by he'd have enough room. But he always managed to brush up against me "by accident." YUK!

Anonymous said...

Ok, now I am really feeling left out, that I didn't have a job at the Shore Vu???? That is so funny that none of you guys remember the others??
I baby sat, YAWN, I also worked for Bill Gould in the summers, for the Shorewood Rec. Dept. During the Chrismtas Season I worked at teh Here and There Gift Shop, do you all remember that place, across from St Roberts on Capitol Dr. I made more $$ babysitting, than the minimun wage everywhere else - which was $1.75??

Anonymous said...

Your right Rebecca, the hot ham and rolls was on Sunday! I don't remember the younger brother, but I do remember the office was up above us and they could always look down at us, do you remember?
It was also difficult to get your paycheck on time!
Speaking of kids working, who out there has a 15 or 16 year old with a part time job? Here in LA, I don't know of one that works!
They do get a new car for their 16th and all have a credit card. Is this the norm now? I would really like to know.

Anonymous said...

Laurel, its the norm where you live my dear, lol.
I remember I use to have to run to Shore-Vu for my Mom all the time. I dont remember any of you working there, even Laurel. lol
Holy Hat Deb, the Here and There Gift Shop!!! Laurel I once bought you a Xmas gift there. I believe it was a Ring and it cost a whopping $5 bucks!

Anonymous said...

Martine, you are so cheap!!!!

Anonymous said...

We have a 17 year old and she has a job. She works in the cafeteria at the University hospital in Iowa City. She makes $10 per hour!!! No more allowance.

We did get her a car when she was 16. It was our old Subaru wagon. We put a little money in it to keep it running and she drove it until it had just over 200,000 miles on it. Now she's got the old Jeep Cherokee which has about 170,000 miles.

Since we live 20 rural miles from her high school, she really needed transportation. Plus if she ever wanted to get a job, or see her friends, or go shopping, or go to a movie...you get the picture. Plus it's only so fun for me to constantly have to drive her around. No such thing as public transportation where we live.

RE: Jobs
My boys walk the nighborhood dogs, and feed cats. My 16 yr. old cuts lawns for the many unhandy neighbors! But they hit the "job jackpot" when they became licenced soccer referees, and get $50 for each game they do! They take a lot of "crap" from parents/coaches etc, but it builds charactor! But the job is seasonal, only 8 weeks in the fall, same in spring, and they both would rather play than ref. My husband is annoyed that they have it so easy. (yet he's made it easy for them. He grew up in a third world country, with no electricity or indoor plumbing, in a one room "house"!!

Anonymous said...

I'm so happy to hear about your childrens jobs, I thought it was a thing of the past! I know there is a lot of homework that is required, it's much more now then we had or did! This sense of entitlement that I encounter here is very disturbing. My kids have to do community service for school, but I also take them with me on the many projects that I'm involved with.
I just don't think it really sinks in though, they come home and we talk about all that we experienced, but then 2 min. later it's back to usual.
It sounds like your kids are very grounded, congratulaions!

Anonymous said...

Wow, so very interesting to here about the lives you have!
I grew up completely spoiled. To my estimation & probably many others!
I did take a job when I was 14 with the YES (youth employment service) as a babysitter for $2/hr . I had two families that hired me for a nite around the Xmas time. They lived on the eastside & had 2 - 1 Yr old twins,a 2 YR old & a 7 yr oldgirl.
Well, as it turned out this was on a holiday & these particular people didn't celebrate this time of year or any other holiday for that matter.
The kids couldn't relate with me at all, or for that matter, their parents. I was able to put them all to sleep safe & sound. But I'll never forgot what a cultural & pediatric challenge it was for me!
Of course, that was long ago & many miles away. Iwould only bore you with the rest.
It's always great to talk about the future! Let's bring it on!!!!

Anonymous said...

Laurel: Not too much sinks in with my kids either. The exception being on 9-11, many neighbors & friends were affected.
I do remember the "Sky Office" @ Shore Vu, like a control tower???
Greta: I have some odd babysitting stories too. EGADS. Ditto on the Spoiled factor - we all were. Wish I knew what the future holds..."50" being around the corner sure makes ya think. Any thoughts, ideas, concerns anyone?

Anonymous said...

re: turning 50, or being over 40...I should have taken stock in Aveda years ago!!!

But I am looking forward to my AARP discount at IHOP in a few years.

Anonymous said...

Yes, many concerns...Top Of The List:

1. How get discount at Early Bird Special at local IHOP;

2. Getting new bifocals;

3. Convincing my spouse to subscribe to AARP;

4. Got prunes?

Anonymous said...

Whoops, Anon Plagarizes Without Knowing It!:

Sorry, Rebecca, looks like you and I have similar humor styles........Without seeing your post, I used the same punchlines in my Geezer Concerns Of the Future.......OK, now off to the Botox Session.......Anon.....

Anonymous said...

I'll save the Botox session for when the spasticity sets in & hopefully, that won't ever happen. About turning 50-WOW! Is that really going to happen to me! I thought 29 was a major crisis so I guess I'll be OK & learn to live with it & beyond it. Who knows maybe life is greener on the other side of that fence. If not certainly more golden (or gray!)

Anonymous said...

Yikes Needles!!! To this day I cant stand them. I still cant watch when giving blood, bleck!
However, you know the crease right between your eyes? Well, thats really bugging me. Do you think they would put me out if I dare go under the needle. I mean I could just take a nice long nap and it would all be done. If not somebody is coming and holding my hand!

Anonymous said...

Martine-- that's what bugs me most-- that damn crease between the eyes!! How do we make that go away??

Anonymous said...

The answer is to sleep on your back !

Anonymous said...

We don't Anita the Dr. does, lol.
Hey we can go together! Remember the buddy system, lol. :)

Anonymous said...

Good idea!

Anonymous said...

It's totally true ! I have more than the crease between the eyes but worse - verticals above the brow ridge! I do believe Martha S did recommend sleeping on you back. Well, FORGET IT - I never have & I never will- oh well-wadda goin to do! no botox for me! thank you

Anonymous said...

Well, hey! It's Valentine's day!
Happy Valentine to everyone & their valentine....

Anonymous said...

Awww and to you and yours Anita :)

Anonymous said...

Story, I'm so looking forward to seeing you this Sat. Are you driving by yourself or will you have company? Either way have a safe trip :) xox M~

Anonymous said...

Joan, how wonderful to see you on here. I swear I was just thinking today I should send out a search party for you. You have been missed my dear. I'm in on the party but way before then with my luck, lol. :)

Anonymous said...

Joan,
And I thought 5th grade homework was too much (for me). Nice to have you back.

Anonymous said...

Good to have you back Joan (!)

And, by the way, you looked terrrifffic at your Holiday Party where you hostessed me and Linda.......and you always look great on TV, too.

Remember the great Hall-Of-Famer Satchel Paige's quote:
"If you didn't know how old you was, how old would you say you was?"

Best from Daniel, always....

Anonymous said...

I love that ! I needed a good laugh today, this move is killing me, and sucking all the good nature out of me!

Anonymous said...

Actually, I'm 20 twenty-eight......

Anonymous said...

I have you beat Daniel...I am only 10 thirty eight!

Bebe said...

To the real old-timers, a tidbit from the past...the corner of Downer & Belleview had a bike shop called Driggets and don't forget the Popcorn Stand (which is still standing..but it's much smaller now)

Anonymous said...

and "Shore-VU" has morphed into "Sun Seekers"

Anonymous said...

.....and Fat Alberts Hot Dogs (next to Baskin Robbins next to Benjy's Deli) is NOW a Starbucks.....$$$ Almighty, as the Shorewood Supes turned their backs on the wonderful homegrown/Milwaukee-based Stone Creek Coffee two blocks away (across from Schwartz' Bookstore)

There's gratitude for you in the form of community spirit........

Anonymous said...

Didn't Schwartz's take the place of the good old Big Boy's?

Anonymous said...

Yes, Ronald Reagan got his haircut style from the old Big Boy sign there......That place burned down and, then, Schwartz' went in...Great place to hang out and fine cafe/java......I even got to speak there once as an author and Jimmy Neubauer came to my talk (such a nice guy to do so....).....

Anonymous said...

If we would've had the blog at that time, you could've put the word out, and maybe more of us would have shown up!! Another notable that was once there was Pete Fromm.
Claudia, have you talked to Pete yet since we talked about that??

Anonymous said...

Nope, no word from Pete...think I should email him and get after him a little?

Anonymous said...

definately.

Anonymous said...

I talked to Don Byrne yesterday. I told him about the reunion & the site. I instructed him to google "In lieu of our reunion shorewood" to locate the blog.
When I went there last night I found old posts first, which I had never seen before & found to be most hilarious!
Claudia were these resurected? I don't know & I guess I don't care - I was glad to read them.
I wonder if there could be a place on the blog right out front -first to welcome & inform newcomers without having to refer to so many different sites of the site. I've been doing this for the last 2 months & find it very discombobulating. Perhaps some sort of a neutral flag at a header to signify people who haven't
been "with " people who are now the "people" of the blog. I know this has been a great site . Great creativity,I'm just wondering if we can open a jar & let a few more come in . It's just a thought to open up the passage ways.

Hi Nonny,

I like this idea a lot and will think about how to execute it -- any other comments/ideas before I try?

thanks!!!
